Progress is power. Narratives of progress, the stories we tell about whether a society is moving in the right or the wrong direction, are immensely potent. But the modern story of progress is an also very dangerous fiction. Because of this, we live in a paradoxical world, where we continue to subscribe to a set of myths. If humanity is to have any chance of a future, we must fundamentally change the way we think about one of our most basic political ideas.
